May 2, 2022: In a recent development, the Assam government has challenged the bail granted to Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani.



Devajit Lon Saikia, Advocate General of Assam in an interview to ANI today (May 2) stated that the state government has challenged the bail granted to Mevani. He further added that the Investigating Officer of Barpeta Road PS will file a separate petition before the Gauhati High Court on May 5 through the Public Prosecutor of Gauhati HC.



Mevani, 41, who was re-arrested by Barpeta Police for allegedly misbehaving with a policewoman, was granted bail by Barpeta Sessions Court on April 29.

He was first arrested in Gujarat by the Assam Police on Thursday, April 21 in connection to an allegedly defamatory tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was later granted by the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday, April 25. He was re-arrested by Barpeta Police within hours of his release on April 25.



Mevani, an independent MLA from Gujarat’s from Banaskantha's Vadgam seat was flown to Assam after his arrest in April 21 where a Kokrajhar CJM court remanded him to three-day police custody. The first arrest was made following an Assam BJP leader’s complaint over an allegedly defamatory tweet by Mevani against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mevani had allegedly tweeted that Modi “considered Godse as God”.
