June 23, 2021: A man from Jorhat’s Baligaon was arrested for attempting to murder his wife over a family dispute on Wednesday.

Jyotika Bora suffered severe injuries after her husband Ashim Bora attacked her with a billhook machete (Dao) and tried to kill her. An insensitive Bora left his wife bleeding in the room for over an hour.

The Jorhat police reached the spot and rescued Jyotika. The accused, Ashim Bora tried to flee from the scene but the police managed to arrest him.

Jyotika is undergoing treatment at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

The Police are currently interrogating her husband.

There has been a marked increase in three categories of crime against women in Assam - domestic violence, kidnapping and molestation--from 2005 to 2020, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

The number of cases of cruelty by husband in 2020 stood at 11,389, whereas the number of molestation cases were reported at 3820, kidnapping of women/girls 4920, rape cases 1736, trafficking 53 and dowry death at 124.

Assam has also been reporting cases of human trafficking.

On Tuesday, June 22 the Assam police arrested five persons on charges of trafficking and rescued seven girls from Baksa’s Tamulpur. Prior to that, last month two minor girls were rescued from Moran in Dibrugarh district. They were being trafficked from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh.
