April 28, 2022: Assam Congress workers and supporters staged protests across the state against the arrest of Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani by Assam Police. Protests were held in Guwahati, Dhubri, Barpeta and Kheroni among other places. Assam Congress has termed the arrest as murder of democracy and has called for putting an immediate end to the misuse of power as is being done by BJP.



Mevani, an Independent MLA from Vadgam in Gujarat was first arrested in Gujarat by the Assam Police on Thursday, April 21 in connection to an allegedly defamatory tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was later granted bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday, April 25.

He was arrested following an Assam BJP leader’s complaint over the allegedly defamatory tweet by Mevani against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mevani had allegedly tweeted that Modi “considered Godse as God”.



 Within hours of being granted bail on April 25, Mewani was re-arrested by Barpeta Police on charges of allegedly misbehaving with a policewoman.
