Guwahati, Jul 3: Assam Police’s crackdown on drugs has been a huge success so far. In just 19 days (May 10-June 29), they have managed to seize contrabands worth over Rs 131 crores.



As many as 723 cases have been registered and 1,253 people have been arrested in connection with either manufacturing or buying and selling drugs.





Assam Police Special DGP GP Singh shared the information through a tweet. Sharing details, the Spl DGP said that the police recovered 68.59 lakh kgs of ganja worth Rs 3.42 crore followed by 16,728 kgs of heroin worth Rs 3.34 crore in the international market.

Cash worth over Rs 84 lakh and foreign currency to the tune of 13,630 has also been seized. Over 31 bighas of cannabis cultivation has been destroyed.



As per police records, the number of cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has increased manifold in the past 10 years in the state. From 180 cases in 2010, as many as 1,023 cases were registered in 2020.



Guwahati is among the main transit points in the region for drugs that enter India from Myanmar through the International Border (IB). Manipur and Mizoram are the other entry and exit points. The drugs smuggled into the region include heroin, brown sugar, marijuana, cough syrups and methamphetamine tablets.
