September 2, 2022: Days after reports of Assam elephant Joymala being tortured in a temple in Tamil Nadu, a team of four members- Hridesh Mishra, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Dr Kushal Sarma, Elephant Veterinarian and Professor, College of Veterinary Science, Aparna Natarajan, SP Morigaon and Dr Rupjyoti Kakati would be leaving for Tamil Nadu to take stock of the condition of Joymala and bring ithe jumbo back.



Joymala was given to Tamil Nadu by Assam in 2008. On August 26, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India exposed the abuse of Joymala. In a video, a mahout was seen beating Joymala using weapons, including pliers.

The Assam Forest Department also plans to move the court to secure the release of the tortured jumbo.
