September 20, 2021: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam published on August 31, 2019, is the "Final NRC", ruled a Foreigners' Tribunal (FT) in Assam. This comes even as the Registrar General of India is yet to notify the NRC.

Declaring a man Indian citizen, the tribunal in Karimganj district held that though National Identity Cards are yet to be issued, "but there is no doubt that this NRC Assam published in 2019 is nothing but Final NRC", Sishir Dey, member (attached), FT-II, Karimganj said hearing the case of Bikram Singha of Jamirala village in the Patherkandi police station area of the district. Singha’s name had figured in the NRC.

The FT-II’s ‘order cum opinion’ comes just days after Assam's Political (B) Department had on September 4 asked the FTs not to pass “consequential orders/directions” and stick to giving an “opinion” as mandated by the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964.
