August 2, 2021: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the state government has decided to waive the 20 per cent surcharge in power bills for tea garden labourers and all BPL consumers.



The Chief Minister, who reviewed the functioning of the Power Department, also said new electricity connections will be provided to nearly five lakh new customers at an expenditure of Rs 1,719 crore sanctioned by the central government.



Taking to Twitter Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Held a meeting with senior officials of 3 power companies APDCL, AEGCL & APGCL at Bijulee Bhawan and reviewed their functioning.”





The key decisions which has been taken in the meeting are –




  • Tea garden labourers and BPL consumers will not be imposed 20% surcharge and their arrear bills can be paid in 10 installments.

  • The results of the exam held for filling up 1600 posts in APDCL will be declared soon.

  • Rs 1719 cr has been sanctioned to #Assam by Central Govt under Saubhagya scheme for providing power connections to 4,80,249 new households.

  • 48557 Anganwadi Centres and 13321 LP Schools will be provided power connections by December, 2021.

  • All government offices’ power bills will be paid from one global head by 1st of every month to APDCL.

  • Steps would be taken to minimize revenue loss of nearly Rs 102 cr which occurs every month due to theft, transmission loss etc.

  • There has been an increase of Rs 300 cr in revenue collection by APDCL in July this year.
