August 30, 2022: The Guwahati Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday conducted its first bone marrow transplant on a patient from Kamrup’s Kamalpur village. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the team headed by Dr Jina Bhattacharjyya, Head of Hematology Department, GMCH for conducting the transplant successfully.

Briefing the media, CM Sarma said that now bone marrow transplants can be done in GMCH and at the B Barooah Cancer Hospital in Guwahati. Currently 2 seats are available in GMCH and 4 in B Borooah Cancer Hospital.

The CM hoped that the number of seats would increase to 20-25 soon so that patients do not have to go outside Assam for bone marrow transplants.

He also said that the Assam government is working on a scheme that would ensure that most patients can undergo the transplant for free. “We should soon be able to announce the Universal Insurance Scheme that would make such transplants available for free for most patients of Assam. The scheme is awaiting the Cabinet nod,” the CM said adding that for children the transplant would be for free under the various health schemes like Rashtriya Bal Suraksha Karyakram (RBSK), Sneha Sparsha and Sneha Sparsha Plus.
