October 4, 2021: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday suspended Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed from the party for "repeatedly violating party discipline."



The MLA was arrested on October 2. Ali has been in the middle of several controversies over the past few days.





He was been sent to police custody for two days.

On October 1, Assam Congress had issued a show cause notice to Ali for make provocative statements linked to the Dholpur eviction drive in Darrang district. The party had also asked Ali to explain accusations that he has been acting as an agent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).



Ali had on September 30 had made some derogatory statements and justified the killing of eight Assamese youths from Garukhuti-Shaolpur martyred during the 1983 Assam agitation.



Earlier in 2020, the Congress legislator had presented a proposal to the state government suggesting setting up a 'Miya Museum' on the premises of Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra. He went on to say, "Lungis should be kept at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra."
