Shillong: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that the Meghalaya government has requested an exemption from certain National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) regulations.
He said that this move aims to increase the intake for teacher training programs, such as BEd and DElEd, to address the severe shortage of trained teachers in the state.
Currently, Meghalaya has only 200 spots available for DElEd training resulting in a significant lack of trained educators.
To bridge this gap, the state government has been providing short-term training to teachers.
However, these programs are not recognized by the NCTE, leaving many teachers without formal certification.
The state is facing a significant challenge with its 18,000 inexperienced teachers, many of whom have undergone short-term courses but remain untrained in the eyes of the NCTE.
To address this issue, the government has been sending math and science instructors to IIT Guwahati for specialized training programs.
In addition to boosting teacher training, the state government has also been focusing on upgrading school facilities.
