July 31, 2021: In a major move to resolve border dispute amicably, Assam and Nagaland signed an agreement to simultaneously withdraw their police forces from the present location to de-escalate the situation along the inter-state border at Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest on the Assam side and Tsurangkong valley on the Nagaland side.
Assam Education Minister Ranauj Pegu and Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton signed the agreement in Chemukidema, Nagaland.
“It is decided by both sides that the security personnel of both states shall simultaneously move back from their present locations to their respective base camps in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in the areas around Ao Senden village and Vikuto village in Nagaland and Jankhona Nal/ Nagajankha and Compartment No 12 in Assam,” the minutes of the meeting said. The withdrawal will begin immediately and will be completed in 24 hours.
Both the state would monitor the area by using UAV and satellite imagery to maintain status quo. The Superintendents of Police of Mokokchang (Nagaland) and Jorhat (Assam) would ensure orderly withdrawal of their respective forces, the meeting also attended by Nagaland Chief Secretary J Alam and Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua decided.
