June 20, 2022: Torrential rains continue to lash Meghalaya and Sonapur Tunnel was hit by another round of landslides. The tunnel one National Highway 06 under East Jaintia Hills District was shut on Monday morning following the landslide.
The East Jaintia Hills district police informed that people have been deployed to clear the tunnel as soon as possible but due to the bad weather, commuters have been asked to stay away from the tunnel and adjoining areas fearing more landslides.
Traffic has been stalled on both sides of the tunnel for the second day today. The tunnel was hit by landslides on Sunday as well disrupting the movement of traffic.
Stranded people were seen trying to walk through the sludge as they tried to get to dry and safer place.
