November 26, 2024: Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq has been named as the key accused in the violence that erupted in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, which led to the deaths of four individuals. According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the police, Barq is accused of provoking a mob and orchestrating the violence for political gain.
The FIR, one of six that have been registered in connection with the incident, alleges that Barq played a pivotal role in disrupting communal harmony in the region. Police claim that on November 22, the MP visited the Jama Masjid in Sambhal without administrative permission. After offering namaz, Barq allegedly gathered a crowd and made inflammatory statements that incited unrest. The FIR further accuses him of using the situation to stir up communal tensions for his political benefit.
The FIR also names Suhail Iqbal, the son of local MLA Iqbal Mahmood, who is said to have fueled the mob's aggression by claiming that Barq was backing their cause. "Ziaur Rahman Barq is with us, we are also with you. We will not let anything happen to you; fulfill your intentions," Iqbal reportedly said, further escalating the situation. The mob, which numbered between 700 to 800 people, then became more violent, leading to widespread chaos.
In total, seven FIRs have been filed regarding the violence, with Warq being listed as Accused No. 1, and Iqbal as Accused No. 2. Six others, including several unidentified individuals, are also named in the reports. The FIR details how the mob, armed with deadly weapons, disrupted a court-ordered survey at the Shahi Jama Masjid, snatching official firearms and targeting police officers with lethal intent.
However, Ziaur Rahman Barq and the Samajwadi Party have vehemently denied the charges. In a statement, they asserted that Barq was out of town at the time of the violence and accused the police of fabricating the allegations against him as part of a conspiracy.
As investigations continue, tensions remain high in the region, with authorities vowing to take strong action against those responsible for the violence.
