November 11, 2022: The Supreme court has ordered the release of six convicts on Friday including Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandaran, who were serving life time imprisonment in connection to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The bench of BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna passed the order while taking into consideration the good conduct of the convicts during their imprisonment.
The Supreme Court noted that they had been in prison for a long time. The Supreme Court further stated “Nalini has been behind bars for over three decade and her conduct has been satisfactory. She has a PG diploma in Computer Application. Ravichandaran’s conduct has also been found satisfactory and he has undertaken various studies during his incarceration including a PG diploma in Arts. He has also collected various amounts for charity.”
The Apex court has ordered the release of Nalini, Ravichandaran, Robert, Jayakumar, S Raja and Sriharan.
On May 18, 2022, the Apex court evoked its power under section 142 of the Indian constitution to release AG Perarivalan, who is one of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.
Deciding Perarivalan’s plea for release from jail based on the recommendation made by the Tamil Nadu government in 2018 the Apex court ordered his release, while the six other convicts remained in jail.
Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandaran had approached the Apex Court like his fellow convict AG Perarivalan seeking release. Following Perarivalan’s release Ravichandaran had sent a letter to Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin seeking the release of the six remaining convicts.
Former PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21st, 1991 in Tamil Nadu by a woman suicide bomber identified as Dhanu.
