February 20, 2024: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Maratha Reservation Bill which intended to extend 10 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in both education and government jobs.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde presented the bill in the state legislative assembly suggesting a 10% reservation for the Maratha community.
The Maharashtra State Socially and Educationally Backward Bill 2024, once enacted, will undergo a review after a decade of implementation.
As per sources, the new legislation aims to address the economic struggles faced by the Maratha community, with 21.22 per cent of the families below the poverty line holding yellow ration cards - a percentage surpassing the state's average of 17.4 per cent.
