October 1, 2024: In a significant escalation of their ongoing protest, junior doctors across West Bengal have declared a 'total cease-work' starting today, demanding urgent action from the state government regarding their safety and security in medical establishments. This decision comes just days after the medics partially resumed duties following a prolonged 42-day strike triggered by the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical Centre.
The junior doctors expressed deep frustration over the slow progress of investigations related to this heinous crime. Speaking on behalf of their colleagues, representatives voiced their anguish over the lack of accountability, stating, “In the last 50 days, only a few percent of CCTV cameras have been installed at state-run hospitals, leaving us vulnerable.” They further highlighted a recent attack on medical staff at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital as indicative of the insufficient security measures currently in place.
Despite assurances from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the dissolution of the 'Rogi Kalyan Committees' in state hospitals, the medics reported that no action has been taken. They also called for the immediate removal of the state's health secretary, citing a failure to fulfill promises made to improve their working conditions.
"It's been ten days since we resumed work, but none of the assurances have been met," they stated. "We have yet to experience a safe working environment in government hospitals. As a result, we are resuming our full cease-work until our demands are addressed."
To amplify their message, the junior doctors have organized a march from College Square to Dharmatala in central Kolkata for Wednesday, inviting the public to join in solidarity. This demonstration aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by medical professionals and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
