March 28, 2023: Gangster turned Politician Atique Ahmed has been sentenced life imprisonment by a court in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
According to some reports, the court has pronounced life sentences to Atique Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi, and Khan Saulat Hanif and imposed Rs 5000 each.
On the other hand, all the seven accused including Ashraf, the brother of Atique, have been acquitted of the case.
Umesh Pal was the prime witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal who was killed by Atique Ahmed. Umesh was allegedly kidnapped from a vehicle on February 28, 2006 near Phansi Imli. He was brutally beaten up and electrocuted to give a written statement that he was not present at the murder scene.
Later, Umesh had filed a case of Kidnapping in July, 2007 in Uttar Pradesh after the formation of new government.
Many people were declared as accused in the case. One of the accused identified as Ansar Ahmed died. Atique, Ashraf and Farhan were sent to jail. In 2009, the court framed charge on the accused and the trail prosecution started.
Later, Umesh Pal filed an application in the High Court demanded early settlement. Then, Allahabad High Court ordered to complete the hearing of the case by March 16, 2023.
On February, 2023, Umesh Pal got killed by after returning from defending the case.
