July 9, 2021: A meeting of Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of Assam and Mizoram is underway to discuss the long-drawn border issue between the two states.
Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and Chief Secretary of Mizoram Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and Mizoram DGP SBK SINGH are present at the meeting.
The meeting is taking place in New Delhi amid reports of growing tension in the Assam-Mizoram border.
It is just last week that tension between the two states flared up after the Mizoram police accused its Assam counterpart of damaging two makeshift camps erected by Mizoram police personnel.
Mizoram’s Kolasib district administration said that Mizoram police personnel had erected three makeshift camps in the trouble-torn bordering area but
Assam home department said that the makeshift camps were made in the forest area of Assam side and alleged that the Mizoram police personnel had made the makeshift camps by encroaching on Assam forest land.
Reports of violence have been coming in since 2020 from different parts of Assam along the Assam-Mizoram border.
In November 2020, alleged miscreants from Mizoram had blown up two government schools in southern Assam’s Cachar district adjoining Hailakandi, a southern Assam district. Police has stepped up vigil around this area following reports of alleged incursion by miscreants from Mizoram.
Assam also has border disputes with Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
