July 7, 2021: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar has passed away at the age of 98, according to the doctors treating him at Mumbai hospital.
The actor had been witnessing age-related health issues for the last few days and had been admitted to the hospital multiple times. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital on June 30.
Earlier, Dilip Kumar was hospitalized on June 6 after experiencing breathlessness. He was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion -- a build-up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs and underwent a successful pleural aspiration procedure. He was discharged after five days.
Kumar's wife Saira banu had been with him throughout and had assured fans that his condition was stable. Banu's last tweet read, "Dilip Kumar Sahab's health is still stable. He is still in ICU, we want to take him home but we are waiting for doctors' approval as they know his medical condition as soon as doctors allow, will take him home. He will not be discharged today. Need prayers of his fans, he will be back soon."
Dilip Kumar had been in and out of hospital over the last few years with illnesses ranging from a kidney ailment to pneumonia. A few years ago, the actor spent his 94th birthday in hospital where he was being treated for fever and a swollen leg.
Before the imposition of the nationwide-lockdown in March last year, actor Dilip Kumar revealed that he and his wife, actress Saira Banu, were under "complete isolation and quarantine" as a precautionary measure.
Dilip Kumar, real name Yusuf Khan, Known as the 'Tragedy King' of Bollywood, the veteran actor's career spanned over six decades. He appeared in some of Indian cinema's most iconic and landmark films including Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Devdas, Ram Aur Shyam, Andaz, Madhumati and Ganga Jamuna. Film lore has it that he rejected the role of Sherif Ali in David Lean's Lawrence Of Arabia, eventually played by Omar Sharif. Dilip Kumar's career spanned several decades, starting in the '40s.
