November 26, 2020: The mortal remains of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi were consigned to flames o Thursday.
He was cremated with full state honours at the Nabagraha cremation ground in the presence of over a thousand people.
His son Gaurav Gogoi lit the pyre as tears rolled down from eyes of many people.
The Assam Police personnel gave 21 gun salute to the departed former chief minister who helmed the home department for 15 years.
Dolly Gogoi was present to witness the final journey of her late husband.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal,ministers Himanta Biswa Sharma, Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, Phani Bhushan Choudhuri, MP Tapan Kumar Gogoi, AICC leaders Jitendra Singh and Subodh Kant Sahay, APCC president Ripun Bora, Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia were among those present at the cremation.
Earlier, his mortal remains ona flower-decked truck travelled a long way amidst a sea of humanity till it reached Nabagraha cremation ground.
As per his wish, his body was taken to the Rukminigaon church from his official residence in the morning where a special prayer was organised for him.
From there, it was taken to Naamghar at AIDC, Ambari Burha Jame Masjid and Ugratara temple before his cremation. The plan to take his mortal remains to Sukreswar temple had to be cancelled at last minute due to time constraints.
In the morning, his body was taken to his residence in Dispur from Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra after 2 days where lakhs of people paid tributes to him.
At his home, all religious rituals were conducted and his footprints were collected before setting out for his final journey.
Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma had also reached there with his family to pay the last tributes to his mentor.
An elaborate security and traffic arrangement was made for the cremation journey. Sitting arrangement for 1000 people was made at Nabagraha and a giant screen was installed at Kali temple for those who could not enter the cremation ground.
