August 24, 2023: The Gauhati High Court on Thursday acquitted all accused in the 2004 Dhemaji Independence Day blast incident.
The explosion occurred on 15 August 2004 at Dhemaji College ground in Assam. At least 13 people were killed including school children and their mothers. Several people were also injured in the explosion.
According to some reports, the bomb was claimed to be planted by the banned organisation United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) near the gate. A lower court had convicted six people allegedly accused in the matter.
Earlier, the accused identified as Dipanjali Burhagohain, Muhi Handique, Jatin Dubori, and Leela Gogoi were sentenced to life imprisonment and the remaining two others identified as Prashanta Bhuyan and Hemen Gogoi were sentenced to four years of imprisonment by the Dhemaji District Court on July 4, 2019.
However, the Guwahati High Court today dismissed the lower court's judgement and released all of them from their charges.
