January 28, 2025: Dr. Biswajit Barooah, the esteemed orthopedic surgeon and former Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Gauhati Medical College, passed away today, 28th January 2025, at his residence in Ulubari at the age of 1:45 pm. He was the son of the late Lokobondhu Dr. Bhubaneshwar Barooah and is survived by his wife, retired professor Gita Barooah.
Dr. Barooah was a pioneer in the field of orthopedics, having completed his MBBS at AMC in 1956 and later an MS in Orthopaedics from Patna University under the guidance of the legendary Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay. He joined GMC in 1970 as Assistant Professor and went on to become the Professor and Head of the Orthopaedic Department in 1974. He further honed his skills in the United Kingdom, working with global authorities such as Prof. Churnley, Dr. Newman, and Dr. Osborne.
His contributions to GMC were immense, including the establishment of Orthopaedics as an independent department and the creation of an Artificial Limb Centre for differently-abled individuals. He was also responsible for introducing the Post Graduate course in Orthopaedics at GMC.
A passionate teacher and prolific contributor to the field, Dr. Barooah published several articles in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics and dedicated his career to advancing medical education and patient care. He retired in 1988 and was later appointed by the Government of India as an advisor for UPSC.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Barooah was a talented musician, known for his skills on the piano and organ. He was instrumental in organizing cultural functions at GMC and was also responsible for composing the college song still sung today.
Dr. Biswajit Barooah will be remembered not only for his groundbreaking work in orthopedics but also for his gentle, humanitarian nature and dedication to his patients and community.
