January 8, 2025: In a major breakthrough, the Assam Police dismantled an interstate human trafficking racket, rescuing two minor girls and arresting nine individuals involved in the heinous crime.
The operation, which spanned over a week and covered Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, began on December 29 when an FIR was lodged at Tinsukia police station after the girls were reported missing.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nitisha Jagtap, who led the operation, said, “We immediately arrested two accused persons following the FIR. However, further investigation revealed that the minors were taken to Arunachal Pradesh.”
The police acted swiftly, with some suspects apprehended in Assam and others in Arunachal Pradesh. The arrested individuals include Suraj Bhumij, Vishal Barman, Cheetah Barman, Nishita Bhumij, Phulumani Goyala, Biren Taid, Pankaj Doley, Raju Tide, and Udip Sharma.
On January 2, the first girl was rescued from Itanagar, followed by the rescue of the second girl from Naharlagun. Both minors are now safe and are being provided with necessary support and care.
DSP Jagtap confirmed the existence of a human trafficking network based on information provided by the rescued girls. “This operation has uncovered a serious trafficking racket, and we are continuing our efforts to identify and apprehend all those involved,” she said.
The successful operation highlights the Assam Police's commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb such crimes.
