July 8, 2022: Ahead of the holy occasion of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha), Assam government has issued strict orders to stop illegal killing or sacrifice of cows, calves, camels and other animals in the name of Bakrid.
The letter from Joint Secretary, Department of Home & Political, Government of Assam to all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police in all districts of Assam, said that the Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, have urged upon the state government to ensure that there is no illegal killing or sacrifice of animals during Bakrid and strict action be taken in case any violation is found.
Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, will be celebrated on July 9 and 10. Bakrid is a 'festival of Qurbani' and holds a lot of significance in Islam. It is one of the two main festivals celebrated by the Muslim community.
The occasion is celebrated worldwide to commemorate and honour the Prophet Ibrahim for his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to god.
