July 29, 2021: Even as Assam-Mizoram border tension continues, news has come in that around 1,200 people from Tripura have taken shelter in Patharkandi area of Karimganj in Assam.
Reportedly, Reang people of Mizoram took shelter in Damchera, Kanchanpur in Tripura after a clash with the Brus of Mizoram and other indigenous communities of Tripura.
Two days ago, Reang people had set the houses of the Charai community on fire and destroyed their agricultural products.
The Brus living in Casco relief camp have been objecting to the local tribals farming on the forestland, patta of which was given under Forest Rights Act by the government.
The administration has also held several meetings to sort out the issue but yielded no result and on July 26 when locals had gone to take possession of the land, they were allegedly attacked which left 32 people injured, police said.
After the clashes, the minority Halam and Charai families crossed the Longai river and took shelter in Manikbandh, Uricherra and Magura villages of Assam.
With the help of local administration there, the families have been provided food and shelter in schools and community properties.
