April 27, 2021: West Tripura District Magistrate (DM) Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav on Monday paid a surprise visit to two marriage halls when wedding ceremonies were going on there and ordered their closure for violating the night curfew order amid the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Yadav visited two marriage halls – Gulab Bagan and Manikya Court in Palace Compound, North Gate area – around 11 pm after receiving complaints from locals that they have been organising wedding ceremonies during curfew hours.

The DM also ordered police to arrest several people, including the bride, groom and their family members for allegedly flouting the COVID-19 protocols.

He also expressed his ire against the police personnel who were on duty at the location to ensure compliance of the curfew rules but were found not cooperating with the administration.

“Manikya Court and Gulab Bagan are banned. They will not be allowed to function for the next one year as marriage halls. All these people who are assembled here, they violated the order under Section 144 of CrPC and would be prosecuted under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. They will all be arrested right now,” he told reporters.

"I also recommend the suspension of the Officer-in-Charge of the West Agartala police station for not acting on repeated complaints of people, and I, as a district magistrate, have to come here. This is very shameful on the part of the police that they behaved like this” Yadav said.

In a video of the incident that has gone viral on social media, the DM can be seen asking people to leave the marriage halls.

Tripura has imposed a night curfew between April 22 to 30 in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas from 10 pm to 5 am in view of a steep rise in COVID infections.
