July 24, 2020: The first-ever container cargo from Kolkata via Bangladesh’s Chattogram port has reached Agartala, the External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday, terming it a “historic milestone” in the Indo-Bangladesh connectivity and economic partnership.



Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya had last week flagged off the first trial container ship from Kolkata carrying cargo meant for Agartala that reached the city via the Chattogram port.



Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb, “I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh premier Smt. Sheikh Hasina for this initiative. Tripura had a single lifeline of communication by road, which would lead to severe price rise and crises in case it broke down due to landslides in monsoons. But, seven communication lifelines including inland waterways connectivity with Bangladesh have come up in last two years”.



MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said it will help in further development of the northeastern region.



Taking to Twitter MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava informed, “Another historic milestone in India-Bangladesh connectivity & economic partnership as the first ever container cargo from Kolkata via Chattogram port reaches Agartala.



This will help in further development of the north eastern region”.
