September 10, 2020: The delimitation of constituencies in Assam may not be possible before the 2021 assembly polls, minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma has hinted this on Thursday.

Replying to a query on if the delimitation could be a reality before the polls, Dr. Sharma said the possibility of this seemed remote. "As per the Delimitation Act, the process has to be taken on the basis of 2001 census. However, in Assam's case, this has to be done on the basis of 2011 census."

"For this, the constitution has to be amended in the parliament. But till now, the process has not yet been started in this regard and there seems no possibility of making any headway before the poll "

He said that the delimitation is required to implement the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and the government is keen to keep it ready before implementing the Clause 6.
