October 17, 2020: Around 5 local vendors selling vegetables on the roadside at Shillong bypass died on the spot when a truck - suspected to be speeding - hit them on Saturday morning.

The deadly accident happened at the Thangshalai Shillong bypass road.

According to a police source, “Yes, four vendors died on the spot after they were hit by a truck, while the fifth one died on his way to the hospital. The matter is under investigation but the preliminary investigation suggests brake failure, but the real reason will only be known once the investigation completes.”

According to a traffic police source, “There were four women and one male vendor who died in the accident when they were hit by one loaded truck (UP51AT. 2949) at Umkhen Thangshalai Shillong Bypass bridge, we could intercept the vehicle but the driver managed to flee away.”

The deceased have been identified as Smti. Balarihun Kharkongor 27 D/o. Bidalin Kharkongor, Smti. Gracefully Nongbri 23, D/o. ïarilang Nongbri, Smti. Banteibha Bina D/o Smti. Pliantibon Bina, Smti. Shantilang Nongbri 28 yrs D/o Thrisha Nongbri.

Later, one Shri Korbarsing Kharduit, 52 years  who was critically injured and passed away while on his way to the hospital.
