March 12, 2019: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Central government to give it a comparative study on pollution caused by firecrackers and automobiles. This came in the wake of hundreds of citizens being unemployed due to the ban on firecrackers.

The apex court observed that why people were running after firecrackers and seeking a ban on them when it seemed that automobiles were the bigger polluter. The vehicular pollution has been often identified as the major cause of toxic elements in the air. Metros are the worst affected by vehicular pollution and diesel automobiles contribute widely in the same.

The Supreme Court also asked, “What about the rights of the unemployed workers in cracker factories? Can't leave them hungry. We did not wish to generate unemployment. If the occupation is legal and duly licensed how can you stop it?”

The apex court has fixed the case for further hearing to April 3. There was an uproar last year when the firecrackers were banned owing to the rampant pollution across the country, lowering the life expectancy of millions.
