Insect based dishes are quite in a demand currently across a section of Indians after the popularity of these dishes in Bangkok, Thailand where many restaurants started serving insect foods.

Abundant with a lot of proteins, insect based dishes were quite popular among Thai farmers.

The habit which by time got grew popular among a section of people of the North-East India.

Silkworm and few varieties of ants were consumed by a section of North-easterners since time immemorial.

While this food culture continues to struggle to break barriers, with the advent of time it’s also becoming popular among rest of Indians as well.

Pradeep (name changed), a Delhi based adventure buff while in a tour to the North-east spoke to DY365, “Whenever I visit North-east I try to taste insect dishes exclusively prepared by few of my friends. At first I felt awkward, but once I tried, it tastes great.”

Deepak (name changed) while on a visit to Bangkok recently feels lucky to have tasted a very special insect dish in a restaurant, “A dish made from fried bamboo caterpillars and watermelon salad inside the kitchen of ‘Insects in the Backyard’, a restaurant which offered first insect based fine dining menu in Bangkok is a treat to such food lovers.”

Ant eggs are another favorite among these food buffs.

According to an article in the Hindustan Times, “With the World’s Population expected to hit 9.8 billion in 2050, many experts remain acutely concerned about how the world will feed itself as well as the environmental damage caused by so much meat being consumed. Insects require a fraction of the costs and the energy needed to farm compared to staples like chicken, pork and beef and hence are more sustainable alternative source to meat consumption.”
