August 21, 2017: In a recent hearing made by the Supreme Court, 2008 Malegaon blast accused Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit has been granted bail.

The bail came after setting aside the Bombay High Court order denying him bail.
Purohit, a former Indian Army officer was accused of a bomb blast that took place on September 29, 2008, at Malegaon, a communally-sensitive town in Nasik district of north Maharashtra. Seven people were and nearly hundred people were injured in the blast.
Purohit was arrested two months after the Malegaon blasts and has already spent nine years in jail has always kept denying his involvement in the conspiracy.
During a hearing last week, senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Purohit, said he has been in jail for the past nine years but charges have still not been framed against him.
He added that a charge against Purohit, under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), has already been dropped. According to MCOCA, hat the Anti-Terrorism Squad had wrongly applied this law against Purohit and 10 others.
Whereas, Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh, appearing for the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said there was evidence against Purohit that would help in framing a charge.
The 4,000-page charge sheet had alleged that Malegaon was selected as the blast target because of a sizeable Muslim population there. It had named Pragya Thakur, Purohit and co-accused, Swami Dayanand Pandey as the key conspirators.
It may be stated that Purohit was a member of Abhinav Bharat, a trust formed to promote Hindu values but allegedly was a front to carry out attacks against Muslims. He used to collect funds to buy arms and explosives for the trust and organized meetings where the Malegaon attack was planned, investigators allege.
It may be stated that Purohit is the first Army officer to be accused of alleged involvement in terrorism activity followed by arrest.
