Utkal Express derails in Muzaffarnagar: CM Naveen Patnaik announces Rs. 5 lakh for accident victims

August 20, 2017: At around 5:46 pm on Saturday evening, fourteen coaches of the Puri-Haridwar Utkal Express derailed near Muzzafarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh. Railway ministry officials said that the reason of the accident is still unknown. Atleast 23 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in the accident.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs. 5 lakh ex-gratia relief to the next of the kin of Odia passengers killed in the accident. He also announced Rs. 50 thousand for each injured person.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of leaders, cutting across party lines, condoled the loss of lives in a train accident in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister tweeted on the Twitter, “Extremely pained by the derailment of the Utkal Express in Muzaffarnagar. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased.”
This is the second train accident in less than a year in Uttar Pradesh.
