Sale of Junk Food banned in School Canteens in Maharashtra

With the increase in Childhood Obesity and related diseases, the Maharashtra government, based on recommendations the Centre which was issued over two years ago has banned the sale of junk food in school canteens.

The centre’s recommendation which urged schools not to sell food `High in Fat, Salt and Sugar' (HFSS) and has suggested healthy alternatives has been implied by the Maharashtra Government.

A Government Resolution (GR) issued today gave a list of 12 categories of foods which cover potato chips, noodles, carbonated soft drinks, pizza, burger, cakes, biscuits, buns, pastries, etc., which cannot be sold in the school canteens and shops within the campus.

It also gives a list of 20 items that can be sold, which include wheat roti, vegetable pulav, idli-vada, coconut water and jaljira.
