July 08, 2020: The Union Home Ministry has set up an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate investigations into allegations against Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF), Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust of violating the legal provisions of money laundering act, Income Tax Act and foreign contribution act.

The spokesperson of Home Ministry said that the Special Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will head the committee. The CBI will also be part of the committee.

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was set up in June 1991 and the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in 2002; both are headed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress says all accounts are audited and has denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation "political vendetta" along with recent moves to cancel Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's government bungalow and the ongoing National Herald case in which Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are being investigated over allegations that they misused party funds for personal profit.

The allegations against RGF were levelled by BJP Chief JP Nadda last month amid the ongoing war of words with the Opposition over the Ladakh face-off.

"The government probe into RGF transactions is a 'natural outcome' of information brought out in the public domain. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is committed to transparency," the ruling BJP said.
