July 28, 2020: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed building of historic Sootea Police Station at Sootea, Biswanath. The police station established in 1913, is restored by Archeology Department keeping its heritage value intact.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the people of Gohpur, Sootea, Dhekiajuli areas fought valiantly against the British during the independence movement and that is why, the state government was working towards preserving the heritage buildings and monuments to inspire the young generation with the glorious history of the state. He also directed the Minister of Archeology Department Keshab Mahanta to take steps for digitizing the important historic documents in the police station.
Speaking at the programme, Minister of Archeology Department Keshab Mahanta informed that the state government was sincerely working to preserve the important monuments and landmarks bearing significance for various communities and for these efforts, Central Government has taken steps to develop the maidams at Charaideo in Sivasagar district as iconic sites with an expenditure of Rs 25 crore. He also said that Dhekiajuli and Sootea police stations have been preserved by keeping their heritage value intact following the direction of the Chief Minister.
