India received overwhelming support in its election to the UN Security Council and it will continue to provide leadership and a new orientation for a reformed multilateral system, India’s Permanent Representative to the U.N. Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti said.

After the vote, Mr. TS Tirumurti said in a video statement, “We are confident (that) in the COVID and post-COVID world, India will continue provide leadership and a new orientation for a reformed multilateral system.”

The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions like imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It has five permanent veto-wielding members - the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia.
