July 18, 2020: Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadilla have started human trials for their respective COVID-19 vaccines.

July 18, 2020: Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadilla have started human trials for their respective COVID-19 vaccines. 



Bharat Biotech has initiated the human clinical trial for Covaxin, the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the company. A total of 375 volunteers have joined the trial. On the other hand, Zydus Cadilla’s trial involves 1048 volunteers.



Covaxin is said to be the country’s first indigenous vaccine which is made using particles of the COVID-19 virus that were killed. On the other hand, Zydus Cadilla’s ZyCov-D uses genetically engineered plasmide coded with antigen.





Both the companies have started their trial from July 15. Covaxin trials are being held across 12 centres while Zydus trial is being conducted at the company’s research centre in Ahmedabad.



Bharat Biotech’s trial will take around 15 months to complete while Zydus Cadill’s trial may take around a year.





Recently, the Drugs Controller General of India has permitted Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadilla to go in for first and second phase of human clinical trials.
