Altogether 1600 candidates were selected for appointment to 200 newly-opened Foreigner's Tribunals in the state. The examination was held on August 11 last year. If not appointed before September 18 next, their selection will become null and void.

Facing an uncertain future, they took to the streets and demanded the government to issue their appointment letters before the expiry of their selection.

The Supreme Court, while hearing the NRC issue, had ordered that 200 new Foreigners Tribunals should be functional in Assam by September 1, 2019. As per the order, the government appointed members to these tribunals and held examination for appointment of other staff. However, even after one year of the examination, the selected candidates are yet to be appointed.
