October 19, 2020: Internationally acclaimed economist Dr. Jayanta Madhab passed away on Sunday night. He was 90. He was just 6 days short of his 91st birthday.



Hailing from Jorhat, Dr Madhab graduated from JB College Jorhat with honours in economics, and did his MA from Gauhati University before getting his doctorate in financial management from London School of Economics. After completing his education Dr Madhab served for a couple of years as financial adviser to the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Corporation and later joined the Manila-headquartered Asian Development Bank (ADB) as a director.



He served as an advisor to the chief minister of Assam, India, from 2003 to early 2009. During his time in government he advised the chief minister on economic and financial affairs before taking up the mandate of employment generation in Assam in the chief minister’s second term.
