December 27, 2020: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday condoled the death of noted dance historian and Padma awardee Dr. Sunil Kothari. Dr. Kothari breathed his last on Sunday due to cardiac arrest. He was 87.



"Saddened to learn about the demise of noted scholar, dance historian Dr. Sunil Kothari. A lifelong researcher of Sattriya culture & recipient of Assam Govt's Madhabdev Award 2019, his death is an irreparable loss to India's cultural fraternity. My heartfelt condolences & prayers," tweeted Sonowal.





Dr. Kothari was born in Mumbai in 1933. A Padmashree awardee, Dr. Sunil Kothari was also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.



He came to Majuli Kamalabari Xatra in 1964 where he studied the Xatriya culture. He traveled to various xatras. From his experiences, he wrote a book on Xatriya dance besides write-ups on the Devdasi and Ojapali dances. He was honoured with the prestigious Madhabdev Award by the Assam government.



Dr. Kothari was Prof. and Dean, School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU, New Delhi and Prof. and Head Dance Dept., Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, Fulbright Professor New York University, USA. He was dance critic of The Times of India group of publications for 40 years. He is roving critic of Sruti monthly and has his own column in dance portal narthaki.com. He also writes for The Hindu and Asian Age. He is based in New Delhi.
