Aug 10, 2020: Health minister Himanta Biswa Sharma hinted, govt may not withdraw the lockdown in Guwahati completely.

Aug 10, 2020: Will lockdown in Guwahati be completely withdrawn after August 14 is the question tossing in the minds of residents of the city. However, if Health minister Himanta Biswa Sharma is to be believed, such a possibility seems to be unlikely as of now.

Sharma on Sunday tweeted that positivity rate in Guwahati in between July 16 to August 8 has come down from 18% to 4.5% and the number of positive cases per day is also slowing down. But he said that still there is a need to maintain this trend for a few more weeks. This suggests that the government is not in favour of complete relaxation after noticing the rampant lockdown violation in various places during the weekend lockdown.

Guwahati has witnessed total 18,713 cases till Sunday. Of these, 13,317 cases were recorded in July alone. Till July, total cases were 2076. However, July alone recorded 7 times of this number. Cases rising in August too, though at a slower proportion. Till August 9, 3320 cases have been recorded. On August 1-275; August 2-268; August 3-414; August 4-550; August 5-362; August 6-470; August 7-442; August 8-299 and on August 9-240 cases have been recorded. The city's highest single day spike was 777 on July 4. The city’s death cases too have gone up. At least 32 deaths have been reported so far from the city.

There are speculations that the government may announce certain additional relaxations when the present UNLOCK expires on August 14. The shops on both sides may be allowed to open while the weekend lockdown may be withdrawn. In stead, the government may announce total lockdown for a week every month. Night curfew may be enforced from 9 PM.
