October 20, 2020: One of the convicts in the Dr. Deben Dutta lynching case has been awarded death penalty while 24 others were sentenced to life imprisonment.



The Jorhat District and Sessions Court on Tuesday announced the quantum of punishment for the 25 persons convicted by the court earlier.



Sanjay Rajowar, the prime accused has been given death sentence by the court. Those sentenced to jail for life are :- Sanjib Rajowar, Dipak Rajowar, Milon Rajowar, Rinku Majhi, Mishilal Majhi, Sibcharan Mahali, Debeswar Rajowar, Kartik Bhumiz, Sanjoy Rajowar, Kalicharan Mahali, Suresh Rajowar, Ajoy Majhi, Upendra Bhumij, Ratul Rajowar, Bablu Rajowar,  Anil Majhi, Bijoy Rajowar, Bolin Rajowar, Rameswar Bhumiz, Siba Mahali, Rahul Rajowar, Kalanag Majhi, Manoj Majhi and Rinku Bakti.



The Court on October 12 had convicted 25 persons in the case under Sections 302/149, 342/149, 353/148, 353/149 of the IPC.

Dr. Dutta, a doctor of the Teok Tea Estate, was attacked by an irate mob of the tea garden on the night of August 31, 2019 over the death of a patient. They alleged the patient died due to the doctor's negligence.



Dr. Dutta was injured severely and profusely bled before police rescued him.



The Assam Police, headed by DIG Eastern Range Dr. Siva Prasad had completed the investigation in record 21 days and filed a 602 page Chargesheet on September 21, 2019.
