August 23, 2020: The APCC move to form a grand alliance has received a jolt with some of its own MLAS opposing the bid. Many Congress MLAs and leaders from upper Assam have opposed the proposed alliance with the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF.

Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi in an exclusive interview to DY365 questioned the logic behind the proposal. In a scathing attack on the APCC leadership, he said that they (the APCC leaders) are trying to pass the examination using unfair means. He even threatened to resign if the party goes ahead with the alliance.

Former MLA Sushanta Buragohain echoed him and said that alliance with AIUDF will weaken the Congress' stand on communal politics.

Former Jorhat MLA and AICC secretary Rana Goswami said that opinion of other alliance partners should be taken before any final call in this regard.

Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia on Saturday night's meeting with the AIUDF leaders at former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's residence said that he was unaware of the meeting and was shocked to see the AIUDF leaders there.

Several Congress leaders including Saikia and APCC president Ripun Bora had met at the former CM's residence on Saturday evening where they were joined by some AIUDF leaders. Emerging after the meeting, AIUDF leader Aminul Islam told media that the two parties have agreed to forge an alliance. However, Bora said that no final decision was taken and the AIUDF leaders had come to express their readiness for an alliance with the Congress.
