November 28, 2020: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday ceremonially launched the website of Majuli Cultural University at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Majuli. The website www.muoc.ac.in would serve as a platform for disseminating information about the various courses and other aspects of the university to students and visitors to the river island.   

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the university mooted to grow as a non-affiliating multidisciplinary higher educational institution with specialization in the studies and research of culture must play its role in culturally unifying the greater Assamese society while strengthening the socio- cultural foundation of the state. Saying that the Cultural University would be able to pave way for the state’s youth to study the colourful cultural heritage of the state in a systematic way, Sonowal stressed on the need to turn the university into a cultural industry so that the students can learn to manage cultural institutions professionally.

​Sonowal also emphasised on the importance of researching the folklore, traditional lifestyles of the indigenous communities of the state to prepare the syllabus of the courses so that the university can become a model for other countries on cultural coexistence. He also informed about the plan to make the university a tourist attraction in spiritually rich and biodiversity hotspot Majuli with eco-friendly architecture. He said that the teaching posts would soon be sanctioned for the university.

​On the occasion, Vice Chancellor of the university Dambarudhar Nath gave a presentation to the Chief Minister and informed that courses on audio visual arts, literature, social science, language and linguistics, yoga, Indian traditional medicines, religious studies and comparative analysis etc would be imparted by the university. The university would start its classes temporarily at the Majuli College as it constructs its infrastructure at the 100 bigha land campus provided at the river side near Garamur. 

In the website launching programme, Satradhikar of Uttar Kamalabari Satra Janardan Deb Goswami, Secretary of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Sudarshan Thakur, DC Majuli were present on the occasion among other dignitaries.

Later, the Chief Minister also visited a session of two months’ handicrafts technical training on folk (bark) painting undergoing at Guru Griha, Garamur Satra under HRD Scheme and interacted with the trainees there.
