September 6, 2020: The Dibrugarh couple accused of pouring hot water on minor domestic help were sent to judicial remand on Sunday. They were arrested on Saturday night 4 days after the incident came to light.



Dr. Sidhi Prasad Deori, a retired doctor of Assam Medical College Hospital and his wife Mitali Konwar, principal of Moran College are accused of pouring hot water on their minor domestic help. After the minor boy made the allegation, the couple went into hiding.





Police launched a manhunt to nab them, but could not trace the couple. On Saturday night, acting on a tip-off, Nagaon police arrested them from Raha Toll Gate while they were on their way to Dibrugarh from New Jalpaiguri. Thery were later handed over to Dibrugarh Police. Their son and daughter are also under arrest. The couple were produced before the PI court which sent them to judicial remand.



Meanwhile, various organisations had protested outside the Dibrugarh police station on Sunday morning demanding severe punishment for them. A scuffle broke out between protesters and police while the couple were taken out for medical tests before producing them in court.





The two had allegedly poured boiling water on the child domestic help on August 29 for sleeping. He was rescued by an NGO and was given medical care. However, the incident came to light two days later on August 31. The Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also taken cognisance of the incident.



According to the victim, he had been staying with the family for last one and half years. During this time, he alleged that the couple often tortured him.
