March 31, 2020: A 52-year-old man tested positive for COVID-19 in Karimganj on Tuesday, making it the first case of coronavirus infection in Assam and third in Northeast region.



Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "A 52-year-old person has been found positive for #Coronavirus and is Assam's first #Covid19 patient. He is undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College. His condition is stable."



As per reports, the man had a travel history to Delhi, visited Jama Masjid and had contact with people near Nizamuddin. The man returned to Guwahati on March 10 and stayed for two days at Athgaon. On March 13 the man travelled again to Badarpur via Rajdhani Express. He felt unwell and went for check up at Cancer Hospital in Cachar on March 17.



Though the man was tested positive for coronavirus at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on March 29, the authorities sent samples to NIV Pune and the institute confirmed it. The patient is currently undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
