October 2, 2020: In yet another shocking incident, mob allegedly killed and burnt the bodies of two people, including a 50-year-old widow, in Karbi Anglong district on the suspicion that the two were practicing witchcraft.

The two were killed by a mob after a kangaroo court in the district punished them on the suspicion of a few local villagers.

The shocking incident took place at a remote village, Rohimapur, under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday night. The police were, however, informed on Thursday about the incident.

Police have recovered remains of the bodies and arrested nine villagers for their alleged involvement in the incident.

The victims were identified as 50-year-old Romabai Halua Gaur and 28-year-old Bijay Gaur.

Police said a kangaroo court of the remote village had branded them as witches and held the widow and the man responsible for the death of a local girl on September 27.

On Wednesday night, some local villagers thrashed the widow and the man and later killed them by using sharp weapons and lathis. The villagers later burnt the bodies of the two.

Karbi Anglong district police have registered a case and sent the remains of the bodies for post-mortem.

More than 110 people have been killed in witch-hunting incidents in Assam since 2011.

According to data presented in the state assembly in November 2019, more than 100 people have been killed in instances of witch-hunting in Assam since 2011.
