July 21, 2020: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb has apologised to the Punjabi and Jat communities after a recent comment of him created outrage.

"In an event organized at Agartala Press Club, I had mentioned the views of some people about my Punjabi and Jat brothers. I did not intend to hurt any community. If my comments have hurt anybody, I personally apologise to them. I'm proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I myself have lived among them for a long time," said the Chief Minister on Tuesday in a series of tweet.

Deb on Sunday had said, "If we talk about the people of Punjab, we say, he's a Punjabi, a Sardar. The Sardar isn't afraid of anyone. They are very strong but have lesser brains. One can't win them over with strength but with love and affection. Let me tell you about the Jats of Haryana. So how do people talk about Jats they say Jats are less intelligent but are very physically healthy? If you challenge a Jat, he will bring his gun out of his house."

A video clip of the Chief Minister’s speech has gone viral on various social media platforms.

Soon after this, the CM came under attack from the Congress demanding immediate action against him.
