November 6, 2020: The Manipur High Court has declared the election of Yengkhom Surchandra from Kakching Assembly Constituency as null and void and declared BJP candidate Mayanglambam Rameshwar as the new MLA.
A single bench of the High Court comprising Justice M V Muralidharan was hearing a petition by M Rameshwar challenging election of Surchandra in the 2017 State Assembly elections.
Surchandra, a two-time MLA, had won the election on a Congress ticket defeating his closest rival BJP candidate Mayanglambam Rameshwar 11,133 to 10,503 votes.
Interestingly, Surchandra had recently defected to BJP leading to his disqualification.
